Can I Control My Band or DJ’s Wedding Playlist? (And Should I?)

bride-and-groom-dancing-in-crowd

There is no reason at all that you shouldn’t have input on the wedding playlist performed on the biggest day of your life. I like to call it your “musical vision” for the day and any quality wedding bandleader or DJ absolutely wants your input. You should discuss what songs cover your “musical vision” for the day while allowing a quality wedding bandleader or DJ room to work their magic and create something unique. While it’s important to include the tunes and moments that are meaningful to you both, such as your entrance song and first dance, be wary of trying to control your bandleader or DJ too much — they are professionals who have years of experience in knowing what songs will appeal to different age groups and create a fantastic atmosphere throughout the wedding.

That’s it right there. PROFESSIONALS. You’ve done your research, read the reviews, and talked to couples who have used these professionals. You didn’t tell the chef how to make each appetizer, you didn’t tell the makeup artist each brush stroke to make, you didn’t tell the florist where to position each stem. They are all wedding professionals, and so is your wedding entertainment. They have built careers learning just what to play and when in order to keep the party moving.

I’m always more interested in a “Do Not Play” list from my clients than a structured list of what to play and when. I got a color coded excel spreadsheet one time from a planner. Play, Do Not Play, play early, play late, etc. I happen to be colorblind! Your quality wedding bandleader has years of experience making those decisions. If someone requests a song that is on your Do Not Play list, trust that they know how to expertly handle it. Your wedding playlist should result in an unforgettable evening that truly reflects yourself and your partner’s personalities! That is what a wedding playlist is all about, music that you want to hear and a guideline for your professional entertainer to work with.

Your quality bandleader or DJ will watch the room and especially the dance floor…I like to say the dance floor speaks to me. Your particular musical tastes can’t possibly match those of all the different age groups of your guests precisely, so your wedding entertainment provider will watch everybody all night long and play songs that speak to them as well. I always ask my clients what age range their guests will be and I let them know that a few Motown songs will be a big hit with the older crowd, rather than Taylor Swift.

We always strive to keep the dance floor full and make it a great party!

The Ideal Band for Your Wedding

“The Ideal Band for Your Wedding!

Big Ray and the Kool Kats did an amazing performance at our wedding outside of Charlotte, N.C. in October 2022. My wife selected them after loving their performance at another wedding. They are phenomenal, and we received lots of positive feedback from our guests about how much they enjoyed the music...(cont.)

We call ourselves a professional wedding band because we are completely dedicated to learning, planning, and playing for couples and their weddings. We are not a band that tours and plays at bars or music halls. We are a band that aims to bring absolute professionalism and sophistication to the couple’s special day. We work extensively with our couples, or their planner, to ensure that the wedding is how they envisioned it.

…Very strong vocal and instrumental talent. They have a great repertoire of older and newer covers; guests of all ages had something that they recognized and enjoyed! (cont.)

We play a wide range of genres, from Motown to classic rock, from Frank Sinatra to today’s top hits. We aim to play music that everyone can dance to and keep the dance floor full. We don’t just play to play, but to help making lasting memories and get that perfect Kodak shot.

They did a great job with their sound design as they were sufficiently loud enough, but guests could still have conversations on the side...(cont.)

We are always fully self-contained and we use top of the line equipment, in order to present the band in a clear and elegant manner. We are very familiar with sound ordinances and we always try to be mindful of our volume.

Ray was a pleasure to work with and an excellent emcee. The band members were not only incredibly talented but very friendly and pleasant…(cont.)

Every member is a seasoned musician who has worked professionally for Big Ray and the Kool Kats for years, so the band is always consistent. Ray Caddell, the band owner, is a longtime professional musician.

…We would highly recommend. We are thankful for Big Ray and the Kool Kats for helping to make our wedding an even more fun and special event!

Mount Ida Wedding, Charlottesville, VA

(Click on the picture to read more) It was a stunning Fall day for Erica & Brady’s wedding at The Lodge at Mount Ida Farm & Vineyard. Mount Ida is a unique and luxury venue on a secluded 5,000-acre sanctuary, which is home to 4 different wedding venues, a vineyard, and brewery. The Lodge is a former 19th century stable, now turned into a flexible event space, adorned with oak panelling, a stone fireplace, crystal chandeliers and polished concrete floors. There’s even a built in stage for the band! It is a beautiful place for couples who want that elegant and rustic charm.

Erica & Brady had a lovely fall theme from the flowers, to the bridesmaids dresses, and decor. We have Cultivate Event Co., MS Events, Blue Ridge Event Productions, and Cody Smith Weddings to thank for the gorgeous wedding set up and staging. The Local and Maliha Creations provided great food and tasty treats for all to enjoy. Anna Kardos Photography and Silver Streak Media made sure to capture all the loving and heartfelt moments.

The Clifton Wedding, Charlottesville, VA

(Click on the picture to read more) Annie & Garrett had a unique summer wedding at The Clifton on June 11, 2022. The Clifton is a historic 1799 classic colonial-style home built for Thomas Jefferson’s daughter and husband, Martha and Thomas Mann Randolph. Thomas Jefferson is a very prominent figure to the locals in Charlottesville because Jefferson’s home, Monticello is housed here as well as the University of Virginia, founded by Jefferson in 1819. The Clifton is now a contemporary, boutique hotel with a classic country estate look. It is a dramatic, yet romantic destination for family vacations, group getaways, romantic retreats, weddings and meetings surrounded in the beauty of Charlottesville.

We love working at The Clifton because not only is it in our hometown, we get to work with great vendors. This wedding had a great team, consisting of wedding planner Adam Donovan-Groves with Donovan-Groves Events, Jimmy Gideon with Gideon Photography, all the way from Utah, Shaking Hands Production, Nature Composed providing great florals, and Cakes by Rachel with delicious cake.

Annie did a fun twist on her bridesmaids’ dresses, which were all in floral themed and went perfect for a summer wedding. Everyone was smiling and having fun, which made for a great crowd to play with.

We had reception in the Court tent, an elegant and stylish sailcloth tent and with the decor and florals, it did not feel like you were in a tent. Annie & Garrett had their first dance as husband and wife to “I’m with You” by Vance Joy. Another fun personal take on the wedding was the Father-Daughter dance. The dance was to the song “Sugar Pie,” but her father used to call her Annie Pie, so we sang “Annie Pie.” What a party, there was not a single person in their seat and we saw nothing but happy faces. We played until about 10 PM, but that was not the end of the party! Annie & Garrett held an after party that went until 2 AM with DJ Derek Tobler. Annie even changed her dress.

Big Ray and the Kool Kats is forever grateful to have been part of Annie & Garrett’s special day!

Farmington Country Club Wedding, Charlottesville, VA

Bride-and-Groom-by-Floral-Archway

Kerrigan & Briggs were happily married on June 18, 2022, surrounded by friends and family at Farmington Country Club. We started with a gorgeous ceremony at Grace Episcopal Church, where Kerrigan wore dress number 1, a wonderful, three quarter sleeved dress with elegant lacing, and all paired with a beautiful bouquet of white roses and blue accents. The wedding party complimented each other beautifully with the striking black tuxedoes and blue bridesmaids dress to help tie in the colors and theme of the wedding.

Just happily married bride and groom celebrated their wedding with an elegant, luxury wedding reception at Farmington Country Club, surrounded by a unique blend of classic country club ambiance and historic estate scenery. This iconic country club has existed for over 90 years and the octagonal Jefferson Room was designed by Thomas Jefferson himself.

From planning and details by Donovan-Groves Events, photography by Jen Fariello, cinematography by Ian’s Creations, and amazing floral arrangements by Southern Blooms by Pat’s Floral Designs, the wedding was perfectly done. All night long from the stage, we saw great execution from the wedding team.

The reception and catering was all courtesy of Farmington Country Club. When it was time to announce the bride and groom, we did so in style. We lead them into the room while playing “When the Saints Go Marching In!” Kerrigan surprised everyone by coming in in a new dress, dress number 2, a pretty floor length dress with a bow on the back.

Leading the Bride & Groom

They shared a heartfelt first dance with “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King, then it was time for toasts and toasts are one of the best things about weddings. Toasts are a great time to show love and good wishes for the bride and groom.

It was finally time to party and party we did at Farmington Country Club. We sang all their musical favorites and even had a surprise performance by one of their friends who is in his own band! Kerrigan stunned us again by coming out in dress number 3, a beautiful strapless dress with delicate lace. The party never stopped and we sent Kerrigan and Briggs off in style with sparklers. Kerrigan showed off her own style by coming out in dress number 4, a wonderful knee length dress.

We had some fun party guests show up, racing presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. What a party it was. (Click on the picture to read more) Jessica and Marc were married April 10, 2022 at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. on a beautiful, sunny day. The Mayflower, part of The Autograph Collection by Marriott, is a timeless and elegant 5-star hotel that provides modern vibrancy and thoughtful design through its rich history.

They had a beautiful ceremony in the State Ballroom with all of their friends and family. We then transitioned into cocktail hour in the East Ballroom and dinner in the Grand Ballroom. One of our favorite parts about weddings are the speeches. They range from funny to serious, tearjerking to heartfelt, sentimental to sweet. These speeches were just that. You could see the love for the bride and groom… and what is a speech without some embarrassing stories about the groom?

Finally, it was time to dance! The crowd was great and we played a range of music, from Frank Sinatra to Motown, and pop hits like Miley Cyrus, Phillip Phillips, and Bruno Mars. A great party and as always, we are forever grateful that we could be part of a couple’s special day!

Historic Rosemont Manor Wedding, Berryville, VA

Bride-and-Groom-with-Chinese-Lion

Emma & Ruohan were married on May 14, 2022 at Historic Rosemont Manor in Berryville, Virginia. Rosemont Manor is a 200 year old private residence turned Northern Virginia premier venue for weddings, corporate events, overnight accommodations, and afternoon teas. This Historic Rosemont Manor wedding was a wonderful blend of elegance, historic grace, and Ruohan’s Chinese heritage.

It was a wonderful ceremony in the East Lawn and then guests relaxed for cocktail hour in the Portico. Emma and Ruohan took beautiful pictures with their friends and family during their Historic Rosemont Manor Wedding.

A fun incorporation from Ruohan’s family was a Formal Lion Dance, which is performed during traditional Chinese occasions, such as weddings, to bring good luck and fortune. This was a special touch for their Historic Rosemont Manor Wedding.

Then it was time to announce the happy couple, they danced to Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. It was an amazing night of dancing, smiles, and happy faces during their Historic Rosemont Manor wedding. We took a pause from dancing (RARELY EVER HAPPENS) to watch fireworks. Then we continued on until it was just Emma and Ruohan in the room for their last dance to The Beautiful Dream by George Ezra.

Bride-and-Groom-dancing-in-front-of-band

(Click on the picture to read more) Nicole and Tyler were happily married on May 28, 2022 at the Church of the Holy Comforter and celebrated with friends and family at James Monroe’s Highland. James Monroe’s Highland is a historic former plantation, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Highland was a working plantation in the early American economy, and home of fifth president, James Monroe. It now offers spectacular historic houses with adjacent gardens, and spacious locations for both wedding ceremonies and receptions.

It was perfect weather for Nicole and Tyler, clear skies and great weather. Highland has a great pavilion for outdoor events and has amazing views of the surrounding hills and Blue Ridge Mountains.

It was such an honor to see the crowd dancing all night long. We played a wide range of music. Half of the family was Guatemalan and so we played a variety of Latin music, such as La Vida Es Un Carnaval by Celia Cruz. At one point in the night, they started their own conga line!
